(Entry 9) Fast Food
In this cartoon, we see two pigeons in the parking lot of a McDonald's. From what the other bird says, the heavier bird eats dropped food. This cartoon is meant to make a statement about obesity due to fast food industries.
Fast food companies make purchasing and consuming unhealthy, high-calorie foods easy and cheap. NEWS Medical Life Sciences states, "Fast food is associated with higher body mass index, less successful weight-loss maintenance and weight gain. Fast foods reduce the quality of diet and provide unhealthy choices especially among children and adolescents raising their risk of obesity." I agree with this fact; however, with our country's food system, it's not easy to access healthy alternatives.
But while I agree, it is not ethical to chastise the ones who don't have the means to buy healthy food. For some, it is the reality that most or all options for food are cheap and accessible fast food. While fast food isn't nutritionally balanced, sometimes that's all there is.

I agree that even tho it is an unhealthy food option, for many people it is the only option because of how cheap it is.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that the way how things going with the USA food system is a really tough task to solve, but anyway the fact that you are talking about this problem is already one of the steps that people could take, to at least try to do something with it.
ReplyDeleteBoth birds probably eat discarded foods, but the commentary is on the parking lot where the heavier bird frequents. Integrate your second image into the context of your post to help readers understand its value and connection to your larger point here.
